PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The use of laser CO2 in food production processes has become a well-accepted trend. A process that can be successfully achieved by laser is the marking of chicken eggs. With fresh produce such as eggs, it is fundamental that information such as expiry date is clearly visible on each item. This data helps the consumer to evaluate the freshness of the product, making the egg consumption safer.
N&N Agriculture is a company that specialises in the production and commercialisation of pasteurised eggs. In order to take a holistic, principled approach that respects natural processes, the company considered the possibility of replacing traditional egg labelling by directly marking onto the eggshell.
Their challenge to Macsa ID was to implement a marking system that could accomplish several goals:
– The ability to apply codes and logo on substrates at high speed, particularly on the fragile and delicate surfaces of eggs.
– Provide an automated system that reduces the time dedicated to the application process.
– Reduce mechanical components leading to low maintenance costs and reduced downtime.
– Permanent marking that won’t rub off to ensure counterfeiting protection.
To achieve these goals, Macsa ID installed three K1030 HPD UHS laser applicators in the N&N Agriculture production chain. This resulted in the ability to print 30 eggs in one tray at high speed – therefore significantly reducing production time. Compared to inkjet systems, lasers are more precise which allows the laser to draw a more complex logotype with a uniform image on the egg’s surface.

With the implementation of an automated marking process, N&N could reduce the number of employees working in the production line. Keep in mind, prior to this, the production line functioned entirely manually. The staff decreased from 10 to 3 people and the productivity increased by 40%.
Thanks to Macsa ID’s expertise and innovation, the solution was achieved with all requirements met and N&N could additionally reduce the use of consumables, inks and solvents, providing environmental and health benefits and, ultimately, leading to a reduced carbon footprint.
