- Working towards finding solutions for industry issues

- Eco-friendly packaging options
As consumers become more environmentally conscious and hold brands and their packaging standards to account, Result Group has been incentivised to develop and package more responsibly. These days we think bigger, are more fearless and ready to implement ever-more innovative packaging solutions. We are also committed to doing our part to address the sustainability challenges facing the packaging industry and our great country.
The emphasis we place on sustainability and circularity can be seen in our recent collaborative partnerships with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) and the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).
Making packaging materials more circular and sustainable is a core priority at Result Group. So much so, that earlier this year our General Manager, Michael Dossor, has joined APCO’s Materials Circularity Working Group. By joining the initiative, the company can now collaborate with partners along the entire value chain to, amongst other matters, identify barriers and opportunities to material circularity for packaging.
Many of us are making a change when it comes to other challenges we are facing as an industry such as reducing plastic usage, but food waste has perhaps, not gained as much attention as these other issues. We, at Result Group are passionate about reducing food waste and Michael Dossor is a dedicated CRC collaborator. Why? Let’s look at the facts:
The National Waste Report by the Department of Environment states that over 5 million tonnes of food end up as landfill every year. If you add up all the food Australia wastes each year, it’s enough to fill 280,000 garbage trucks. The report also estimated 35% of the average household bin is food waste whilst “20-40% of fruit and vegetables are rejected even before they reach the shops, mostly because they don’t meet the consumers’ and supermarkets’ cosmetic aesthetics.”(foodwise.com.au) These are alarming statistics and they are set to increase if we don’t do something about this issue now.
Whilst there isn’t a clear-cut answer as to why there is so much food waste, waste is mostly driven by retailers and consumers, who throw away food because they have purchased too much, spoils quickly due to inadequate packaging or because it does not meet aesthetic standards.
Food waste is something that occurs at every stage of the process ranging from the moment it is grown to the moment it reaches the consumer. Food can become lost through spillages, it can become spoiled during transit and it can become damaged by insect infestation or handling at retail level. In reality, there are many reasons as to why food is wasted but there are also a number of ways in which food waste can be avoided especially from a packaging standpoint.
Contact us to discuss these options and, if we don’t have one off the shelf, we’ll certainly develop one to tailor the needs of your product and consumer, whilst also benefiting the environment.
