Revolutionary Roll ‘n’ Recycle® Scheme for Semi-Rigid Plastics

Recycling is not just a matter of recovering recyclable material; it is a total economic system. Few people realise that their local kerbside collection program is only the beginning of a recycling loop and yet, despite the proliferation of kerbside collection bins and public awareness campaigns, recycling programs around soft plastics have remained an issue. The lack of supporting waste infrastructure in Australia has proven challenging for recovering soft plastics…until now.

Roll ‘n’ Recycle® is a system that allows customers to dispose of monopolymer pouches and other semi-rigid* films and bags in the kerbside recycling system.

The Roll ‘n’ Recycle® system encourages consumers to roll their packaging and secure it with a specially engineered label that is attached to the packaging during the manufacturing process,      before placing it into their co-mingled kerbside recycling bin for collection.

When it comes to packaging, even the smallest details can have an impact on recyclability, including the packaging shape, size, weight, inks, adhesives, and the materials used.

This is where the genius but also, the simplicity of Roll ‘n’ Recycle® comes into play. It takes packaging that was previously NOT recyclable in household recycle bins, and with the consumers’ help, changes its shape so it CAN be placed in the household recycle bin and dealt with during the initial sorting process.

How is it done?  Once the packaging is empty, the consumer rolls down the material in the shape of a cylinder, lifts and peels the supplied label and presses firmly to ensure the shape is maintained throughout its collection journey.  Rolling the material makes it three-dimensional, enabling it to move through current recycling infrastructure as a rigid plastic container would.

To ensure clear communication to customers, relevant information would be placed on the pack, in addition to the label to ensure the process is followed correctly.
